Research and formation in pediatric osteopathy
Context
The development of osteopathy in France is a fact that was confirmed by the French Act on osteopathy from March 2004 and its decrees from March 2007; though insufficient, they are a first step of recognition of the beneficial contribution of Osteopathy in France.
However, the treatment of children from less than six months old by non physician osteopaths was excluded, unless a medical certificate of non contraindication. Nothing justifies this position. Osteopathy is a comprehensive approach to primary healthcare plans and cannot exclude from its scope those essential moments for a healthy life.
The osteopaths investigate the causes of disorder or dysfunction suffered by patients. Chronologically, many problems start in the womb, birth and infancy.
In terms of public health, taking into account the per natal and pediatric osteopathy is a source of savings and basic preventive health essential, few evaluations have yet been made
Finally, there is no research in French scientific publications regarding the contribution of osteopathy to children.
So, few post graduates have emerged in France, without any real assessment or certificate. Roselyne Lalauze Pol was the first to stress the need to build a capacity in Pediatric Osteopathy
In Great Britain and Germany, trainings in OPD (pediatric osteopathic diploma) were conducted on 400 hours including 160 hours of clinical (practice) with already qualified osteopaths. In the UK, the qualification has been approved by the University of Bedfordshire and became a Master in pediatric osteopathy.
The training of osteopaths in France should become a professional Master 2, representing 5 years of study leading to a clinical examination and defense of a thesis, it does not deepen what is special about the approach of perinatal and children.
Perinatal Osteopathy
The basic principles of osteopathy are the same but the terms of the intrauterine life, the embryonic and fetal evolution, the strong development of life in children, the psychomotor development, the sensorimotor and emotional needs are different. The osteopaths must acquire, from qualified teachers, an experiential knowledge that involves hours of practice; the development of a specific personal quality needs to be associated with personal maturity of the therapist. Are we well enough trained to put a differential diagnosis to guide these young patients to qualified pediatricians when necessary? The osteopathic diagnosis take into account the different conditions of development and provide effective treatment taking into account the relationship of the child with his mother and his environment.
Following the model established in Germany and in Great Britain and with their sponsorship, we offer a post graduate delivering the essentials medical and osteopathic pediatric aspects for the treatment for children and leading to a competency in perinatal and pediatric osteopathy.
The first year deals with the basic lessons of clinical experience, the second year deals with specific lessons and the clinical approach leading to a personal work to move towards a Master (European University Standards). Research work in connection with a university structure can be established that can lead to a postgraduate degree linked to the French Academy of Osteopathy (AO). The teachers are all experts in their field of competence, meeting them is fully enriching.
The two years will be divided into 5 seminars of 3 days or 240 hours / training with the added bonus participation,10 days per year, in FROP clinics or within existing pediatric clinics, participation in associations or work with DOs relevant in pediatric osteopathy.
It is a demanding training taking into account the importance of good child health and prevention of disorders. It requires strong motivation and commitment on the part of teachers and students to participate in tomorrow’s health.
A scientific committee is responsible for developing programs to verify the quality of education offered and the relevance of the project and its practical realization. Training in Pediatric Osteopathy, FROP is working with existing structures in France, Europe and the United States; the partnership with the OSD and the FPO as an advisory role to share their experience in this field.
A committee of teachers will be consulted when necessary on specific issues related to the development of the training FROP.
The World Osteopathic Health Organization WOHO remains the guarantee of the consistency of this project with the « Guidelines for osteopathic practice » filed by the WHO
